Owens Corning Duration vs Oakridge: Which Shingle Fits Your Home?

The short answer: Both are good architectural shingles, and both carry Owens Corning's Limited Lifetime warranty for as long as you own the home. The real difference is the nailing area. Duration has SureNail Technology, a woven fabric strip that gives it a 130-mph wind warranty with the standard four nails. Oakridge is rated 110 mph with four nails and can reach 130 mph only with six nails and Owens Corning starter shingles. If you want the most wind holding power, or a color that only comes in the Duration line, pick Duration. If you're after a clean, dependable roof on a tighter budget, Oakridge is a smart choice.

The short version:

  • Duration: SureNail fabric strip in the nailing zone. Owens Corning lists a 130-mph wind warranty with four nails.
  • Oakridge: Owens Corning calls it "a step up from traditional three-tab shingles." It's 110 mph standard, or 130 mph with a six-nail pattern plus Owens Corning starter shingles along the eaves and rakes.
  • Warranty: both carry a Limited Lifetime warranty for as long as you own your home (see the actual warranty for details).
  • Looks: both are dimensional (laminated) shingles. Color choices differ by line, so pick the color first and then check which line has it.
  • Our take: Owens Corning Duration is the shingle we install most. We install Oakridge and many other brands too, and we're happy to quote options side by side.

We're a family-owned Fort Wayne roofing company, in business since 2012 and an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. "Duration or Oakridge?" is one of the questions we hear most. Here's how we explain it.

What's actually different between Duration and Oakridge?

From the street, the two look a lot alike. Both are two-layer laminated shingles with a shadow line that gives the roof depth. The difference sits where the nails go.

Duration has what Owens Corning calls SureNail Technology. It's an engineered woven fabric strip embedded across the nailing zone on the face of the shingle. Owens Corning says the fabric overlays the two shingle layers to create "Triple Layer Protection" against nail pull-through in high wind. When Owens Corning launched the TruDefinition Duration series, it said the design helps the shingles withstand winds up to 130 mph using only four nails per shingle (Owens Corning newsroom).

Oakridge doesn't have the SureNail strip. Owens Corning's data sheet lists it at 110 mph with a standard four-nail application. The 130-mph rating applies only with six nails and Owens Corning starter shingle products along the eaves and rakes (Oakridge data sheet).

Is Duration worth it over Oakridge?

For most homes we look at, it comes down to three things.

  1. Wind exposure. Open lots, lake houses and homes on the edge of farm fields take more wind than a house tucked into an older Fort Wayne neighborhood. On an exposed roof, we lean toward Duration because its 130-mph wind warranty comes with the standard four nails.
  2. Color. Some colors homeowners fall in love with are Duration colors. If the color decides it for you, that settles it.
  3. How long you'll stay. Both warranties run "for as long as you own your home," so the length of the warranty isn't the deciding factor. Holding power and looks are.

Both lines carry the Owens Corning Limited Lifetime shingle warranty, and that's the language we'll put on your paperwork.

Are Owens Corning Duration shingles the best?

"Best" depends on the roof. Duration is the main shingle we install, though we install many other brands as well. Its SureNail strip is a real, visible feature, not just a marketing color. Owens Corning calls it a "No Guess" wide nailing zone because the fabric strip shows the installer exactly where the nails belong.

The Duration family also includes specialty versions. Owens Corning's product guide lists Duration MAX, Duration FLEX, Duration STORM, Duration COOL, Duration Premium and Duration Designer colors, all built with SureNail Technology. Most homeowners around here choose standard TruDefinition Duration.

Oakridge isn't a "cheap" shingle. It's a solid architectural shingle with the same Limited Lifetime warranty length. We'd rather put a homeowner in Oakridge installed right than in Duration installed wrong.

What we see on Fort Wayne-area jobs

This is where 14 years of tear-offs help.

  • Duration is our main shingle, not our only one. You'll see it on most of our roof replacement projects, but we also install Oakridge and many other brands, depending on what fits the house and the homeowner. We'll quote options side by side so you can see the difference on your own roof before you decide.
  • Lake houses and open lots get Duration. One example is the lake house we roofed in Columbia City with Duration in Sandcastle (photo below). Wind coming off open water or open fields is the situation SureNail was built for.
  • Oakridge looks great on simpler rooflines. Ranches and Cape Cods with one or two main planes look sharp in Oakridge. Recent ones include Estate Gray, Onyx Black, Teak and Driftwood.
  • Color matters more than people expect. A small sample can't show what a whole roof of Desert Rose or Driftwood will look like. Before you decide, drive past a finished roof in the color you're considering. Owens Corning gives the same advice: color and granule blends can look different on an actual roof and at your roof's pitch.
  • Installation matters as much as the brand. Both lines have to be nailed in the zone Owens Corning specifies, over a sound deck, with the right underlayment and ventilation. That's what keeps the warranty in force, and it's where we spend our attention on every tear-off.

Which colors come in Duration vs Oakridge?

Owens Corning sells many colors in both lines, but not every color is in every line, and availability changes by region. Here are colors we've actually installed:

  • Oakridge: Estate Gray, Onyx Black, Teak, Driftwood
  • Duration: Sandcastle, Desert Rose, Peppercorn, Harbor Blue

Got a favorite? We'll check which lines carry it in our area before we write your quote, since Owens Corning notes availability can change.

How to decide in five minutes

  • Pick Duration if your home is exposed to wind, you want the 130-mph rating with standard nailing, or your color is a Duration color.
  • Pick Oakridge if you want a dependable architectural roof with the same Limited Lifetime warranty length, your color comes in Oakridge, and you'd like to keep the budget lean.
  • Either way, ask your roofer how they nail (four or six nails), whether they use Owens Corning starter shingles at the eaves and rakes, and what goes under the shingles. Those answers matter as much as the name on the bundle.

Frequently asked questions

Is Duration better than Oakridge?

Duration has SureNail Technology, a woven fabric strip in the nailing zone. It carries a 130-mph wind warranty with standard four-nail installation. Oakridge is 110 mph standard and reaches 130 mph only with six nails and Owens Corning starter shingles. Both carry a Limited Lifetime warranty for as long as you own the home. Duration has more holding power, and Oakridge is a dependable step up from three-tab.

Do Duration and Oakridge look different on the roof?

Not much from the street. Both are laminated architectural shingles with a dimensional shadow line. Your color choice changes the look far more than the line does. Before you choose, look at a finished roof in your color. The color can look different in the sun, in shade and at your roof's pitch.

What shingle warranty comes with Duration?

Duration carries the Owens Corning Limited Lifetime shingle warranty, for as long as you own your home. The actual warranty document spells out the coverage, limitations and requirements. We'll go over it with you and use Owens Corning's official language on your paperwork.

Can I get the 130-mph wind warranty on Oakridge?

Yes, if it's installed the way Owens Corning requires. According to the Oakridge data sheet, 130 mph applies only with a six-nail application and Owens Corning starter shingle products along the eaves and rakes, installed per the instructions. If wind rating is a priority, ask us to quote it that way or compare it with Duration.

Which one should I choose for a lake house or open lot?

For homes exposed to wind off water or open fields, we usually recommend Duration. SureNail gives it a 130-mph wind warranty with standard nailing. Oakridge installed with six nails and Owens Corning starter shingles also qualifies for 130 mph. We'll talk through both options on your estimate.
